Li Shufu

Geely Automobile Holding CO Ltd is a creation born out of Li Shu Fu’s inspiration. The China native from Hangzou’s city pursued his dreams in 1998. Beauty Leopard and China Dragon will give you a glimpse of Geely’s signature models. Geely’s industry distinguishes itself notably from other companies in China, by being inexpensive and independent at the very same time.

University was not part of Li’s plans at all. In 1984 with his father’s help, he was able to invest 2000 yuan into his new company. At 21, he managed to use the total expertise of huge industries, specialized in the refrigeration industry. He soon came up with his own prototype and began to sell his products nationwide. In 1989, new regulations came in the industry and got into his way. Licenses were now a requirement. Since he didn’t have them he was forced to move on to another venture.

China was charmed by high class bikes. Li also got swayed by the new trend and started producing motorcycles. He successfully bailed out an almost insolvent State-owned motorcycle industry. He designed an original four-stroke engine. His sales expanded in Germany Italy and the United States, summing up a total of 22 countries. In a tree year time slot, Geely became the fourth largest private company while ranking number one among his competitors. Geely by the way means auspicious benefit…

His next step was to conquer the car industry. After a doing a lot of research, car designing blew him into a new direction. His business would be based on the following pillars: quality techniques, procedures, parts and technology. Li shared his vision with some engineers, friends and other governmental organizations. His friend’s insight, led him to set-up a partnership with Sichuan, a compact car’s producer. In august 1998, his opened his first Geely enterprise in Linhai… A year after, a second one, was opened in Ningbo.

As he progressed, Li encountered a few obstacles along his path. The government had never allowed a private company to produce cars. Many licenses still had to be acquired for the company, in order to be fully legitimate. On the other side, consumers found it hard to trust the new brand, which had extremely low pricing, compared to State-owned companies or foreign companies.

Li kept on knocking on at the door of several authorities. The State Economic and Trade Cooperation Committee finally acknowledge the type of cars produced by Geely, on the 30th of October, 2001. The State of China had reviewed and reduced their car pricing. Sales greatly expanded by the end of 2001 and 2002. Geely ranked itself among other national car production centers.

As part of his natural manners, he simply thinks out of the box. His train of thoughts is a pure reflection of audacity and ingenuity. He succeeded with his motorcycle manufacturing while others strongly believed it was going to be a total flop. He was eager to enter the private market with his private car company, while no one ever dared to do so. His tenacious personality would never allow a “NO” to destroy his aspirations, strongly held in his heart.

The King of Pop

Michael Jackson nicknamed the King of Pop was born on August 29, in 1958.
His father Joseph Jackson saw that his children were very talented so he decided to form a musical group. The original group debuted in the beginning of the 1960’s and was composed of 3 of Michael’s brothers: Tito, Jermaine and Jackie. Michael joined the group at the age of 5.
He made quite an impression at his young age. He had an outstanding range of powerful chords. He was the lead singer of the Jackson 5 and his older Marlon also entered the group known today as the Jacksons.

Soon the Jacksons, were making opening acts for Motown artists such as James Brown, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, the Supremes, etc. Berry Gordy, Motown’s founder signed the group to his label. Their father remained their manager and a lot of hard work was put on recording their tracks and choreographies. Their father was known to be abusive and very strict with them.
Tension razed between Joseph Jackson and Gordy over recording controlling issues. The Jacksons moved to Epic Records except for Jermaine who still remained with Motown as he wanted to work on his solo career.

Michael’s solo album “Off the Wall” was released in 1979, a blend of funk and pop including the song Grammy Award winning Track “Rock with You”, had positive impact on the World. 1982’s Thriller, generated 10 smash hits, including Billie Jean and Beat it. His famous dance move, the moonwalk emerged while Michael was creating the dance sequences for his number one hit “Beat it”. Although, to this day, “Thriller” still prevails as a classic of all times. It stayed for 37 consecutive weeks on the charts and it stayed for a total of 80 weeks. It was nominated for 12 Grammy awards and was designated 8 of these.

As his career was moving forward, a $5 million dollar endorsement deal had been concluded with Pepsi-Cola. In 1984 while filming a commercial, he got severely injured. Plastic surgery was used to repair the major damages caused by the multiple burns. This open door led to many other surgeries. “Bad” came out in 1987, it had success but not at the same extent at Thriller’s album. A considerable amount of his investments went to the Creation of Neverland.
A daydreaming ranch filled with exotic pets, amusement rides, often available to children for special events. Later sold in 2008 to gain more financial loose.

In 1994, his marriage with Lisa Marie Presley was announced, it lasted 2 years and ended in 1996. He had a second marriage with Debbie Rowe later during the same year. His had two children through artificial insemination, Prince Michael Jackson in 1997 and Paris Michael Jackson in 1998. Prince Michael Jackson 2 dubbed Blanket was born after from an unknown mother. He divorced in 1998 and obtained full custody of their kids.

His other successful albums include the following, “Dangerous”, 1991 including single “Black and White” featuring model Tyra Banks. His last solo album “Invicible” released in 2001. Showing his philanthropic side, he has also collaborated on a charity single “We Are the World,” USA for Africa.
Amongst the pool of other singing artists were also found Lionel Ritchie, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, and Tina Turner.

Michael was known to be shy and very secretive about his private life. He rarely gave interviews beside his one time appearance on Oprah. On that very same show, he commented on his different skin tone changes to be the outcome of a disease called vitiligo. During his life history, he has been accused of child molesting more than once but was never found guilty.

This year of 2009, tickets were already sold out for some of his 50 concerts series as his “Final curtain call”. Just before he even had the chance to start touring, he unexpectedly died of a cardiac arrest on June 25th, 2009. Some will say overdose of medication, for now the rumor abides as an unsolved mystery.

None of the less, no artist can even come close to him. He was surely one of a kind. He remains a true icon. He truly rocked his entertaining skills on stage. Besides he’s the only one who was allowed to wear white socks with black shoes. We will remember him as he slowly “moonwalked” and stylishly bowed down on stage while holding his hat with his designer gloves.

Jean Pascal

Jean Pascal moved from Haiti to Laval, close to Montreal at the age of 4 with his mother and older. After winning his first championship he pursued his boxing career. In the past, he had also played hockey and soccer. He had impressively gathered a perfect record since his entrance in the pros in 2005. He already won 7 Canadian amateur championships (1998-2004). Without mentioning that he is the only fighter to be nominated as Boxer of the Year in Canada, 3 times in a row (2001-2003). Pascal has won all the following titles: the 2002 Commonwealth games and the 2003 Pan American games both as a light middleweight. He won the 2004 Olympic Games with a bronze medal, as he lost to Yordanis Despaigne.

His professional career started on the 3rd of February of 2005. He fought with Justin Hann. He was defeated on the second round only. His 12 next fights were all striking victories. In 2006, He battled in the Casino of Montreal against Lucas Green Arias. Lucas was unable to stand for the seventh round after receiving multiples punches which made Pascal the winner of the super WBC Latino super middleweight title. Meanwhile Oxygen had to be given to Green on his way to the hospital.

He obtained the WBO NABO super middleweight title by unanimous decision as he triumphed over Jermain Mackay on November 18, 2006. The same scenario repeats itself over and over. As a resume, the exhaustive list of his defeated opponents includes: Christian Cruz, world title challenger Kingsley Ikeke, Esteban Camou, Brian Norman, Omar Pittman, Pablo Daniel Zamora Nievas. His only loss was to Carl “The Cobra” Froch. He didn’t get knocked out but got outpointed for constant tagging on the ring. World champion WBC Heavyweight and WBO inter-continental super middleweight represents his titles acquired in 2009.

His most challenging fight took place on June 20th 2009. This historical event took place at the Montreal’s Bell center. Using his speed and his refined fighter skills, he won over the unbeaten 31year old Adrian “The Shark ” Diaconu. Some even say he was kind of dancing up there, showing a wide variety of synchronized kicks. Diaconu was not able to adjust. Diaconu is himself a pretty strong fighter and was not going to give up easily. Although, he was clearly not able to keep up to Pascal’s speed. Both fighters were cheered at the end. It was a great fight, both adversaries had given their all. Pascal demonstrated real bravery and showed to the world that he belonged at 175 pounds.

How this 26 year old does it? Intelligence, ambition, self-confidence, natural talent and hardness made him the winner of the WBC light-heavyweight crown. Work, discipline and perseverance are the three major principles he clings to.

Many do not appreciate Pascal’s cockiness and unfriendly comments. Although, no one can deny the fact that he surely knew what he was doing. How many of us are truly and fully exploiting the potential that have been invested in us? In order to do so, you need to know who you are. Jean Pascal has proved that he knows exactly who he is, He kept on sowing with zeal and here are the fruits of his harvest. He earned the public’s respect and it is well deserved.

Mozilla Firefox

Dave Hyatt and Blake Ross, 24, are the two major brains behind Mozilla Firefox which was named after the Red Panda found in Himalayas, Nepal and southern China. It is shown on their logo.

Their one goal was to make always things simpler with a new feature for each version which would clearly identify theirs as the latest. They created this non-profit project, with no initial public offering. Both of them got concerned with Microsoft’s increase of spywares, adware and pop-up ads. It was simply based on the public’s starvation for innovation.

It all started in September 2002, with the Phoenix browser, a lower version of Firefox.
What made it so different? The original version involved tabbed browsing and a download manager which made it quite remarkable. In the 3rd version released in October 2002. A Sidebar, integrated, search bar, different add-ons, which allows customizing your browser and other components. Later in April 2003, Phoenix had no choice to change its name to Firebird, since Phoenix Technologies already had in possession a trademark for the name.
In May 2003 Firebird 06 was released, and made accessible to the Macintosh and Windows community. This version included the “clear private data” option. This option allows the user to erase visited websites, entered information and so on. Within the next five following months, 3 other version had been created, introducing bug fixers, automatic downloading, etc.

A database project was already named after Firebird, Firebird was then changed to Firefox in February 2004. The first public launch occurred in September 2004. Ebay and Amazon had been added to the search bar as engine choices. Other features such as “importing favorites” and other setting from Internet Explorer were also made available. A million downloads within five days.
After other try-outs, the official launch took place on November 9th 2004, translated in 31 languages. The final version Firefox 2.0 with much more add-ons and extensions, the Session Restore is one of the greatest. You know when your computer suddenly crashes for no reasons. Well this option allows you to restore all of your open tabs and web pages. What a time saver when you find your self on the panic attack mode!

Since its debut, Firefox has won dedicated fans and continues its race to move up the charts against Internet Explorer. There’s seems to be a lot of surprises coming ahead.

Guy Laliberté

“I am blessed for what I have, but I believed in it from the beginning. Today, the dream is the same: I still want to travel, I still want to entertain, and I most certainly still want to have fun.”

Guy Laliberté
Guy Laliberté has decided to surpass the conventional circus ideology that we’ve all been accustomed too including clowns, elephants and so on. Instead he opted for themed presentations executed by international acrobats and gymnastic athletes as precious as gold.

Guy Laliberté has become the co-founder and president of Cirque du Soleil.
He is considered to be one of the richest and most successful men in Canada. Cirque du Soleil has been travelling on 3 continents and has been recognized for its eccentricity.

Laliberté was born in Quebec City on September 2, 1959 and was raised in St-Bruno. Music and parties were always part of the household. Folk dancing, martial arts and choirs represented all of his extra curriculum activities as a child. At the age of 16 and still in high schools, he was already skilled as an event organizer. Then he played harmonica and the accordion for a Folk music group named “La Grande Gueule”. At the age of 18, he toured in Europe as a street performer. Guy went to London with little money and nowhere to stay or sleep. His used his talents to gain more money so he could freely travel throughout Europe. He perfected his skills and he added some more to his portfolio, such as fire breathing, magic, juggling and stilt walking. His flame for the performing arts only grew stronger.

In 1984, Cirque du Soleil started as a small group with funds provided by the Quebec Government. The group visited 13 Canadian cities including Toronto and Vancouver. In 1987, Cirque du Soleil had gained a solid base and reputation throughout Canada. Guy even saw further and managed a booking for the opening of the Los Angeles Arts Festival. The crowd included high profile celebrities and it was a success. The financial gain was used to hire new performers for a new presentation and the old presentation was still available to the public.

Pleasure, fun, creativity and adventure are major guidelines in Laliberté’s business strategy. His shows include the following, “Mystere ” was launched in 1992 in Las Vegas, “O” opened in 1998 in Las Vegas, “La Nouba” opened the same year in Orlando. In 2003 “Zumanity” , strictly for adult, opened in Las Vegas. “Alegria” and “Saltimbanco” remain as pioneers of their trademark.

Facebook

Question of the day : Does anyone who’s at least a bit connected on Internet can not know about Facebook in 2009?
It’s taken our world by storm (with more than 200 million active users worldwide!!!) and all of you know how to use it, network with it, interact through it but do you know about how it all started? (okay…that makes two questions for today…)

So here is for the little history :

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with fellow computer science major students and his roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while he was a student at Harvard University. Facebook membership was initially limited to Harvard students but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It later expanded further to include any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to ANYBODY and EVERYBODY!

The advent of Facebook came about as a spin-off of a Harvard University version of Hot or Not called Facemash.Mark Zuckerberg, while attending Harvard as a sophomore, concocted Facemash on October 28, 2003. Zuckerberg was blogging about a girl and trying to think of something to do to get her off his mind.According to The Harvard Crimson, Facemash “used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the ‘hotter’ person.” To accomplish this, Zuckerberg hacked into the protected areas of Harvard’s computer network and copied the house’s private dormitory ID images. He even later said “.. one thing is certain, and it’s that I’m a jerk for making this site. Oh well. Someone had to do it eventually … ” The site was quickly forwarded to several campus group list-servers but was shut down a few days later by the Harvard administration. Zuckerberg was charged by the administration with br
each of security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy and faced expulsion, but ultimately the charges were dropped.

The following semester, Zuckerberg founded “The Facebook”, originally located at thefacebook.com, on February 4, 2004.Membership was initially restricted to students of Harvard College, and within the first month, more than half the undergraduate population at Harvard was registered on the service.Eduardo Saverin (business aspects), Dustin Moskovitz (programmer), Andrew McCollum (graphic artist), and Chris Hughes soon joined Zuckerberg to help promote the website. Then, Facebook expanded and expanded and kept on expanding… an The company dropped ‘The’ from its name after purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005 for $200,000.

Facebook was opened on September 26, 2006 to everyone of ages 13 and older with a valid e-mail address. In October 2008, Facebook announced that it was to set up its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.

Facebook has met with some controversy over the past few years. It has been blocked intermittently in several countries including Syria and Iran, although Iran later unblocked Facebook in 2009.It has also been banned at many places of work to discourage employees from wasting time using the service. Privacy has also been an issue, and it has been compromised several times. Facebook is also facing several lawsuits from a number of Zuckerberg’s former classmates, who claim that Facebook had stolen their source code and other intellectual property.Well, well…That all comes with success, right?

Success you say?
A February 2009 Compete.com study has ranked Facebook as the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace!

Terri fox

He would call his journey the Marathon of Hope.

After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres (3,107 miles) to prepare, Terry started his run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning, enthusiasm soon grew, and the money collected along his route began to mount.
Terry knew how to cope with pain. He’d run through it as he always had before; he’d simply keep going until the pain went away.

He ran 42 kilometres (26 miles) a day through Canada’s Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario!!!! He’d run close to a marathon a day, for 143 days. No mean achievement for an able-bodied runner, an extraordinary feat for an amputee!!!

It was a journey that Canadians never forgot.

Throughout his run and even in the months before, Terry neglected his medical appointments. No one could force him to see a doctor for a check-up. He said he didn’t believe the cancer would come back…However, on September 1st, after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles), Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs.

An entire nation was stunned and saddened.

Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at age 22.

The heroic Canadian was gone, but his legacy was just beginning.

To date, more than $400 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

——————————————–

His motto was : “Don’t give up, you can make it!”

Words that spurred him and lifted his spirits.
